Large lectern eagle. Period late 17th, early 18th.
Carved yew wood, monochrome paint, iron book rest. The base is in turned wood mounted on a three-sided base reminiscent of the Trinity.
The eagle is imposing, the wings are spread and wide-ranging, the gaze high and stern. He pivots perfectly on his foot. The eagle, animal symbol of Saint John the Evangelist, grips a globe in its claws, a mark of the universal sovereignty of the Christian faith.
The set can be dismantled into three parts. The three-sided base, the turned wooden shaft and the eagle.
